Our Role

Our role in creating strong regional and remote communities is five-fold.

1. Service delivery coordination 
We are the lead agency responsible for the management and delivery of the National Partnership Agreement Remote Service Delivery and the Territory Government's Working Future strategy. This is delivered by our Service Delivery Coordination Unit

2. Regional economic development
We work in partnership with business, industry and communities to support activities that Grow the Territory - stimulating sustainable economic growth and wealth creation in all regions of the Territory and support development through economic and investment profiling and the Regional Economic Development Fund grants program.

3. Indigenous policy
We establish Indigenous policy and provide whole-of-government strategic advice on Indigenous affairs, in particular Outstations/Homelands and the protection of Aboriginal language. The department is also responsible for monitoring and reporting on progress of the achievement of Closing the Gap targets.

4. Indigenous Economic Development
To encourage workforce participation and grow the wealth of Indigenous Territorians through the Indigenous Business Development program to assist Indigenous people to enter commercial businesses or expand existing businesses, and put in place strategies to guide Indigenous Economic Development.

5. Remote and regional commitments in our delivery areas
Each of our operation areas of local government, housing, interpretation and translation services, animal welfare and water safety are implementing the Working Future, Growing the Territory and Territory 2030 strategies and the National Partnership Agreement on Remote Service Delivery in the regions and remote communities.
